故事发生在20世纪30年代的川藏一带，中甸地区的草原上，彪勇孔武的青年扎西平措（胡歌 饰）纵马奔驰。童年时发生在母亲身上的悲惨一幕，让怀着报仇念头的他跟随虫草老爹进入九龙湾当了马贼。成年后，为了救回被人抓走的虫草老爹，扎西劫走了土司多吉（巍子 饰）及其女儿勒仓卓玛（王力可 饰）。这是一场由阴谋导致的误会，却让青年和美丽的卓玛结下不解之缘。大时代背景下，川藏自然无法偏安一隅。中甸国民政府县长王大隆妖魔化共产党，策动多吉的弟弟桑吉（多布杰 饰）篡夺土司位置，阻止红军进藏。 蓝天雪山，高原白云，少数民族儿女在民族和家国的大义前谱写了一曲生命之歌……
